1879 Metric Dollar, Struck in Lead
    Unique Judd-1621, AU Details

1879 $1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1621, Pollock-1817, Unique -- Environmental Damage -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. William Barber's metric dollar design: Liberty wears a pearl-bordered coronet reading LIBERTY. This design is similar to that used on Barber's half union patterns of 1877. The elaborate reverse design comprises an open wreath of cotton and corn tied at the base with a ribbon and bow. DEO EST GLORIA appears in a cartouche above that is shaped somewhat like a descending dove. The center legend shows a purported silver-gold-copper composition that totals 25 grams. Struck in lead with a reeded edge. The commonly encountered examples of this Metric dollar design are found in silver or goloid. However, this is a unique example that is struck in lead with a reeded edge. The surfaces are noticeably corroded with irregular patches of medium gray interspersed on each side by light gray (corrosion). A rare opportunity to acquire a unique example of this otherwise widely available pattern in other metals.

With the superb catalog, a masterwork prepared by Mark Borckhardt, the sale was destined to meet all of my expectations; that it did, and then some. Be assured that I would highly recommend Heritage Auctions to any of my associates contemplating the sale
