Copper Striking of the Rare 1879 Pattern Quintuple Stella, Judd-1644, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS

1879 $20 Metric Twenty Dollar, Judd-1644, Pollock-1844, R.6-7, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. The design is very similar to that featured on the regular issue Liberty Double Eagle of 1879, but there are two significant differences. The obverse periphery is inscribed * 30 * G * 1.5 * S * 3.5 * C * 35 * G * R * A * M * S *, and the motto DEO EST GLORIA has been substituted for IN GOD WE TRUST within the reverse stars. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Glowing mint luster in orange, red, and pink shades backlights medium intensity, copper-brown toning. The razor sharp definition is all that one would expect for a specimen striking, as are the shimmering, reflective fields that readily reveal their proof qualities at direct angles. A rare and desirable reminder of Representative Kasson's 1879 proposal to produce Four Dollar and Twenty Dollar coins in metric gold alloy that could be used in international circulation.
