    1879 'Society Lady' or 'Washlady'
    Silver Quarter, Judd-1590, PR66

    1879 25C Washlady Quarter Dollar, Judd-1590, Pollock-1783, High R.6, PR66 PCGS.
    Design.
The Washlady design is attributed to Charles Barber, with Liberty's hair bound behind the head. The obverse has UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border with the date below the bust. The reverse has an eagle clutching an olive branch and three arrows. The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend and E PLURIBUS UNUM motto follow inside the upper reverse border with the denomination expressed as QUAR. DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
It is thought that the original "Washlady" name was given by David Proskey in the April 1891 New York Coin and Stamp Company catalog of the F.W. Doughty Collection. Dave Bowers writes in the ninth edition of the Judd reference: "Assistant engraver Charles E. Barber's suite of silver patterns of the dime, quarter dollar, half dollar, and dollar denominations stands today as among his finest work. In the late 19th century, this depiction of Liberty was dubbed the 'Washlady' design, a rather unfortunate designation, as the woman depicted is elegantly coiffed, and certainly not styled as a laundress might have been."

    Physical Description.
Both sides of this brilliant pattern are deeply mirrored around lustrous silver devices. The surfaces are pristine with a hint of light gold toning. Somewhat weakly detailed on the reverse, as usual for the design. This is one of four Judd-1590s that PCGS has certified at the PR66 level, and there are only two pieces finer at that service (11/08). There are a handful of numerically finer pieces certified at NGC.

    Provenance.
    Unknown.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 2AGG, PCGS# 61967)

The way you grouped lots, photographed, and presented the material was too notch. I was impressed that you took the time to attribute coins to the Krause reference as their "plate coin" and that many of your descriptions included pertinent facts and infor
