1879 Flowing Hair Four Dollar, Judd-1636, PR63 Brown
Large Head Design, Struck in Copper

    1879 $4 Flowing Hair Four Dollar, Judd-1636, Pollock-1834, Low R.7, PR63 Brown NGC.
    Design.
Large Head. The Charles Barber design. On the obverse the head of Liberty, hair flowing down below her neck, faces left, with the inscription (each character separated by stars) 6 G .3 S .7 C 7 G R A M S around the rim. She wears a coronet bearing the word LIBERTY, and the date 1879 is below. On the reverse a five-pointed star occupies the center, bearing the legend ONE STELLA / 400 CENTS. In an inner circle are E PLURIBUS UNUM and DEO EST GLORIA ("God is glory"), with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FOUR DOL. around the outer rim. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
This is the same obverse design as on the famous gold 1879 Flowing Hair stellas--but we must qualify that this is the Large Head design. According to USPatterns.com, "A second obverse die is known by a single example in copper whose pedigree dates back to the 1906 H.P. Smith sale lot 1447. It has since been gilted." The ninth edition of Judd lists the variant as Judd-1636a, although USPatterns.com still identifies it (after Pollock) as Judd-1636, Pollock-1837. USPatterns.com notes that its photos of the two pieces side by side are from the Superior Rio Rancho Estate sale (10/1974), where both were sold.

Terminology aside, the variants are easily distinguished: The Large Head pieces (Judd-1635 to 1637) show the sharp bust truncation pointing to the first star, while the Small Head variant (Judd-1636a) points to the tip of the 1 in the date. The Large Head coronet tip touches a star at the front of Liberty's forehead, while the Small Head touches (or nearly so) the 7 to the left of that star. The Rio Rancho auction made no note of the unique design, merely identifying the piece as a gilt copper "Judd-1636, Liberty head left, diademed," and it sold for $5,000 against a $5,000 estimate.

    Physical Description.
The protected areas around the legends are muted orange-red, but the open fields are darker bluish-purple on the obverse. The reverse is a deeper bluish-purple throughout, with tinges of jade. A few darker flecks appear on the obverse under a loupe. NGC Census: 1 in PR63 Brown, 2 finer. PCGS Population: None in PR63 Brown, 1 finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
