Fiery Red Gem 1879 Washlady Half Dollar, Judd-1598

1879 50C Washlady Half Dollar, Judd-1598, Pollock-1792, R.6, PR65 Red PCGS. Barber's Washlady motif is featured on the obverse. The head of Liberty faces left with IN GOD WE TRUST above and the date below. The reverse depicts an eagle with spread wings holding an olive branch in one talon and three long, slender arrows in the other. The legends surround the eagle, with the denomination below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. According to the website: "The "Washlady" half dollar [is] considered today to be one of the most beautiful designs ever made by the US Mint. At that time, however, the design was not well received as, apparently, Liberty's hair and the way it was tied back was considered to be disheveled. The Washlady name dates back to the April 1891 New York Coin and Stamp auction of the F.W. Doughty collection and was probably given by David Proskey." This is a magnificent coin that has full, blazing cherry-red color on each side. With only minor variations in color and a couple of minute flecks of carbon, this coin is essentially as struck.
