Probably Unique 1942 Cent Die Trial Struck in "White Metal"
1942 Cent, Unlisted in Judd, Pollock-2077, Unique (?), PR 65 NGC. Regular die trials issue. Struck in white metal with a plain edge. In early 1942 regular die trials were struck in pure zinc, copper and zinc in varying proportions, copperweld, antimony, and lead. It seems all these pieces were destroyed, but somehow this die trial escaped. It was examined many years ago by Walter Breen, and while Walter heard rumors of other 1942 cents struck in aluminum, aluminum-bronze, brass, and "composition," none of these pieces are known today. The coin itself has almost the appearance of steel, being bright and nearly white beneath the hazy rose and lilac patina that covers each side. Roller marks are seen on the lower half of Lincoln's coat and a narrow planchet lamination runs along the rim just below the date. A singular opportunity to acquire what appears to be the sole survivor of the wartime experiments in alternate alloys.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 61999, GSID# 14893)
