Description
1805 Private Restrike Quarter, Unlisted in Judd, Pollock-6105, Unique (?), MS 60 Brown ANACS. Of unknown origin, the obverse die was probably retrieved as scrap by Montroville Dickeson as the reverse is known in the Taxay reference as "Dickeson's die" on page 299 of his 1976 edition of the Catalogue. The obverse was struck from heavily rusted B-2 dies. The reverse reproduces an "eagle on half shield," which is actually a pattern die for a revenue stamp (ca. 1816). Struck in copper with an unknown edge. Deep chocolate-brown color overall, the obverse shows very heavy die rust and a rim break from 3 to 5 o'clock. On the reverse the fields were crudely polished, leaving prominent striations, and there is a die break from the rim at 5 o'clock that extends inward for 3 mm.
Alleged to be Ex: Virgil Brand and Metzger Collection; New Netherlands Sale, 9/53.
