Description

Undated "Quarter Dollar" Reverse Hub Trial, Judd-Appendix A, Pollock-8040, R.8. The obverse features an eagle holding an olive branch and shield similar to the design featured on quarters beginning in 1815. The design is quite crude and it is now presumed that the hub was intended for production of token dies, button dies, or buttons. Erroneously listed in the Judd book as a half eagle die trial. Struck in brass with an irregular, plain edge. Listed in the Pollock reference in the chapter entitled Formerly Misattributed Pieces 1803-1867. Pollock writes he found an example in an exonumia collection whose owner considered it a button, however, there is no evidence of a shank having been soldered onto the reverse. There are several deep digs at the top of the obverse, and again at the top of the reverse. Rim bumps and nicks are also present at the top and bottom of each side.
