Description

1880 Goloid Metric Dollar in Aluminum
Judd-1656, PR66 Cameo
Only Five Specimens Confirmed

1880 $1 Goloid Metric dollar, Judd-1656, Pollock-1856, High R.7, PR66 Cameo PCGS. The design is identical to Judd-1633, except dated 1880 instead of 1879. The head of Liberty shows the hair braided and coiled at the back of her head faces left. A band inscribed LIBERTY encircles her hair. There are 13 stars at the border, 7 left and 6 right. The inscription 15.3 - G. 236.7 - S. 28 - C. 14 GRAMS is centered within a circle of 38 stars on the reverse. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination GOLOID METRIC DOLLAR are above the circle, and the motto DEO EST GLORIA and 100 CENTS are below. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Although a dozen or so examples exist each in goloid or copper, Saul Teichman knows of only five aluminum specimens. For the present piece, the weight was recorded as 55.0 grains in its 1988 catalog appearance, where it was described as "one of the most elegant, exquisite, [and] artistically satisfying pattern coins to come on the market in our time." Brilliant and beautiful with exemplary surfaces save for a narrow lamination beneath the TES in STATES. The strike is intricate aside from minor softness on the GRA in GRAMS.
Ex: Philip M. Mann, Jr. & Glenn B. Smedley (Bowers and Merena, 9/1988), lot 611.
