Description

1880 Goloid Metric Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Judd-1645, Tied for Finest Certified
Ex: Woodin, Judd

1880 $1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1645, Pollock-1845, High R.6, PR66 Cameo NGC. Ex: Lemus. On the obverse, the head of Liberty faces left and 13 stars encircle the rim with the motto above and date below the portrait. The reverse offers a wreath of cotton and wheat and an inner circle of dots enclosing the legends. Struck in goloid with a reeded edge. The High R.6 rarity rating makes this pattern, while nonetheless rare, among the more available goloid metric designs. USPatterns.com estimates that more than a dozen pieces are known. Silver-gold patina cover both sides with remarkable field-device contrast present throughout. The golden hues deepen near the rims into cinnamon and russet. A small patch of hazy ice-blue beneath Liberty's chin serves as a pedigree marker, along with a thin, curved lintmark in the obverse field between star 5 and the nose. Remarkably attractive. This is the finest example certified at NGC (with or without Cameo), tied with one non-Cameo PR66 coin at PCGS (7/14).
Ex: William H. Woodin; Dr. J. Hewitt Judd; Stack's (10/1986), lot 108; Lemus/Queller Collection, FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 1931; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2014), lot 3592, realized $10,575.
