Wonderful 1880 Metric Dollar in Copper
    Judd-1649, PR67 Red and Brown

    1880 $1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1649, Pollock-1849, Low R.7, PR67 Red and Brown NGC.
George T. Morgan's Liberty Head design as also on Judd-1622. Liberty's hair is done up in a bun, with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters, the Latin motto above, stars seven left, six right. The reverse offers a wreath of cotton and wheat, with inner circle of dots enclosing 895.8 S. / 4.2--G. / 100--C. / 25 GRAMS. DEO EST GLORIA ("God is glory/To God be the glory") appears in a cartouche, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR at the rim. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

The Judd ninth edition ranks both the goloid Judd-1648 and the copper Judd-1649 as Low R.7, and there are currently eight examples of each certified at NGC and PCGS combined (10/08). But this copper piece in PR67 Red and Brown is numerically the single finest certified of not only the Judd-1649, but also the Judd-1648s which typically are in somewhat lower grades.

    Physical Description.
A wonderful coin, with typical blue patina in the fields and a considerable remaining presence of original red luster surrounding the devices, all of which is indicative of original copper coinage left undisturbed for more than a century. The strike and subsequent preservation are nonetheless remarkable, and this piece appears easily to justify its Superb Gem ranking. Among the most eye-appealing pieces in the entire Lemus Collection (and that is saying quite a lot). A single tiny mark on the lower jawline provides a pedigree marker, but overall the surfaces are remarkably clean.

    Ex: 70th Anniversary Sale (Stack's, 10/2005), lot 1385.
