    Description

    1881 Cent Pattern in Copper
    Judd-1666, PR65 Red

1881 1C Liberty Head One Cent, Judd-1666, Pollock-1866, R.6-7, PR65 Red PCGS. Charles Barber's design for a one cent piece with the head later used on the Liberty nickel. The reverse is simply laid out with a Roman numeral I in the center, surrounded by a wreath of wheat and cotton. Struck in copper with a plain edge. About a dozen of these pieces are known in copper, half of which were purchased by Virgil Brand from Henry Chapman in 1916. Partly contrasted and nicely preserved surfaces display vibrant copper-orange coloration. A pedigree-identifying spot occurs under the N in UNITED.
