1881 Pattern Five Cents, MS 63 Red and Brown PCGS

1881 5C Five Cents, Judd-1672, Pollock-1873, R.6-7, PR 63 Red and Brown PCGS. The overall design is similar to that used on the Liberty Head nickel of the era. The obverse, however, displays UNITED STATES OF AMERICA about the periphery in place of the encircling stars. The reverse is devoid of lettering save for the Roman numeral five within the wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Considerable golden-orange luster radiates through the mottled olive-brown patina. Intense crimson and lilac undertones are visible at select light levels, but neither side betrays mentionable surface detractions. An old fingerprint over the central obverse does, however, rule out a near-Gem assessment.
