Gem Proof 1882 Pattern Nickel, Judd-16841882 5C Liberty Head Five Cents, Judd-1684, Pollock-1886, Low R.6, PR66 PCGS. The obverse is similar to that adopted for the regular issue Liberty Nickel in 1883, but the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA has replaced the stars around the periphery. The reverse depicts a large Roman numeral V within a wreath of corn and cotton with E PLURIBUS UNUM at the top. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Uniform blue-gray and golden patina smothers the underlying proof finish, which begins to shine through when tilted at an angle. For pedigree purposes, a tiny lintmark shows between Liberty's chin and the U of UNITED.
