Judd-1695 1882 Shield 'Nickel' in Aluminum
    Carefully Preserved Gem Cameo Proof

1882 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-1695, Pollock-1897, Low R.7, PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Effectively regular Shield nickel dies, except that the ball on the bottom of the shield has been replaced with a point. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. The preservation and contrast are both remarkable considering the age of the aluminum and the unfamiliarity of mint employees with the element in coinage. Sharply struck and beautiful. The sole Cameo example of this pattern graded by PCGS (11/11).
