1883 Five Cents in Aluminum
Judd-1706, PR65, CAC

1883 5C Five Cents, Judd-1706, Pollock-1910, High R.7, PR65 PCGS. CAC. The obverse features Charles Barber's head of Liberty facing left as adopted on the Liberty nickel in this year, the date is below with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the margin in place of stars. The reverse reads PURE NICKEL in the center, surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, FIVE above, CENTS below, seven stars left, and six right. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. Saul Teichman records this example as fifth of seven known to him in his photo roster that is available on the Newman Numismatic Portal. This design was also struck in pure nickel, and one piece is known in non-magnetic nickel. Struck from a highly striated planchet, the fields are also highly reflective. The frosted devices impart a moderate cameo effect, but this is not designated on the insert. PCGS Population: 2 in 65, 0 finer (3/26).
