    Description

1883 Liberty Nickel Variant in Aluminum
    Judd-1711, PR65

1883 5C Liberty Head Five Cents, Judd-1711, Pollock-1915, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. The obverse die is similar to the regular-issue Liberty nickel, but UNITED STATES OF AMERICA replaces stars around the peripheries. Peripheral stars appear on the reverse, with FIVE above and CENTS below, with a wreath -- again similar to the regular issue -- containing 50 N. / 50 C. on two lines, a reference to a 50:50 nickel / copper mix. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. Two to three dozen nickel strikes were produced, but aluminum pieces are rare with only a half dozen or so known. The surfaces are bright and unoxidized with deeply reflective fields. There are a few contact marks and minor planchet flaws scattered across each side, but none are individually bothersome.
