Description
1883 Transitional Liberty Nickel in Aluminum
Judd-1713, PR64
1883 5C Liberty Head Five Cents, Judd-1713, Pollock-1917, High
R.7, PR64 PCGS. The obverse closely resembles that of the
regular issue Liberty nickel, except that the stars have been
replaced with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The reverse has
a wreath similar to that on the Liberty nickel, except it has been
reduced in size and is bookended by stars. The inscription 33 N. /
67 C. is inside the wreath. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge.
It is estimated that two to three dozen pieces are believed extant
of this popular transitional pattern. The fields are heavily
striated, similar to the Exemplar pattern we also handled,
suggesting this may be a common trait to all known pieces. The
surfaces otherwise are bright and untoned with minor milkiness and
a few scattered Mint-created lint marks. Housed in a
first-generation holder.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2AL3, PCGS# 62130, Greysheet# 15085)
