    Description

1883 Liberty Nickel Dies Trial in Aluminum
    Judd-1720, PR64

1883 5C Liberty Nickel, With Cents, Judd-1720, Pollock-1927, High R.7, PR64 PCGS. Nearly identical to the distributed 1883 With Cents nickel, but there are subtle differences on the length of the tassels over the large V. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. Struck as a regular dies trial, with examples known in copper (Judd-1719A) and the present aluminum version (Judd-1720). This issue was not listed by Robert Coulton Davis in his early work on patterns. An example was included in William Woodin's collection and it passed to Judson Brenner, who exhibited it at the 1914 ANS Exhibition. The brilliant surfaces show streaks of what we think are impurities in the aluminum. Deeply reflective mirrors are seen in the fields.
Ex: Dr. Alfred R. Globus Pattern Collection (Stack's, 5/1998), lot 527.
