    Description

    1884 'Holey' Cent Pattern
    Judd-1721, PR68 Cameo

1884 1C Judd-1721, Pollock-1929, R.6, PR68 Cameo PCGS. Eastman Johnson's "holey" design for the cent with the center perforated with an irregular circumference. The obverse bears the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA about the upper rim and the date at the bottom. The reverse shows the denomination ONE CENT at the top with an inverted shield and two laurel sprigs below. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. A curious feature of these patterns is that the hole in the center appears to be hand-cut. On this piece it is almost perfectly done. A nice complement to the near-perfect preservation of this pattern's surfaces. Each side is mostly brilliant, but there are just the faintest milky flecks and dabs of golden color evident when closely examined. (Variety PCGS# 391598, Base PCGS# 62150)
