Description

1884 Five Cent in Aluminum
Judd-1725, PR66 Cameo

1884 5C Five Cent, Judd-1725, Pollock-1935, Low R.7, PR66 Cameo PCGS. An annular (ring-shaped) pattern featuring a circle of 13 stars on the obverse surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date, 1884, below. It shows Eastman Johnson's design with an octagonal perforation in the center which varies in size and alignment and appears to be hand-cut based on the distortion and metal flow at the edges. The reverse exhibits FIVE above and CENTS below separated by a small shield on the right and left. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. The Teichman roster lists nine specimens, one being a possible duplicate. An unusually bright, non-hairlined example with little of the normally seen oxidation on the surface. A planchet flaw has left a slightly rough finish bordering the octagonal perforation below the star under TA in STATES, serving as a pedigree marker.
