    1885 Morgan Dollar, PR66 Brown
    Judd-1748, Experimental Lettered Edge

1885 $1 Morgan Dollar, Judd-1748, Pollock-1960, Low R.7, PR66 Brown NGC. Struck in copper from regular issue obverse and reverse dies. The edge is lettered instead of reeded, and displays E PLURIBUS UNUM, even though the same motto is prominent on the obverse. In his 1916 Bement Collection catalog, Henry Chapman stated the pattern was ordered by Philadelphia Mint Superintendent A.L. Snowden. The present fully struck and high grade specimen exhibits dramatic peach-red, sea-green, and electric-blue toning.
Ex: Jones Beach Collection (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 1624, which realized $9,200.
