    Description

    1885 Snowden Dollar, Judd-1747, PR66
    With Experimental Edge Lettering

    1885 $1 Snowden Dollar, Judd-1747, Pollock-1959, Low R.6, PR66 NGC.
    Design.
    The dies are the regular-issue 1885 Morgan dollar dies, but there is experimental edge lettering as follows: * * * * * * E * / PLURIBUS * / UNUM * * * * *. Struck in silver.

    Commentary.
As Pollock notes in his pattern reference, this was an experiment of Colonel Archibald Loudon Snowden, chief coiner and superintendent of the Philadelphia Mint. According to Pollock:

"Henry Chapman provided some amusing commentary on the edge lettering of these pieces in his Bement Collection sale of 1916: 'A.L. Snowden's invention ... which he exhibited to me with great pride; was going to have it patented and revolutionize the World's Coinage until I exhibited to him a crown of Oliver Cromwell, and showed him where Thos. Simon had made a better job of it two hundred and thirty-seven years before. The Col. collapsed forthwith.' "

The edge lettering was applied in three segments, using an apparatus that Snowden (who was also the nephew of Mint Director James Ross Snowden) had devised himself. Note that the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears on the coin twice!

    Physical Description.
A flashy proof with good luster and considerable dollops of gold, cinnamon, and auburn over the silvery, well-struck surfaces. The coin is housed in an NGC tabbed holder that allows easy viewing of the experimental edge lettering. In PR66 this piece is tied with one other for finest certified of the half dozen examples at NGC. There are 11 others graded at PCGS, the finest a single PR66 (10/08).

    Provenance.
    Unknown.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2ALT, PCGS# 62189)
