1885 Snowden Dollar, Judd-1748, PR68 Red and Brown

    1885 $1 Snowden Dollar, Judd-1748, Pollock-1960, Low R.7, PR68 Red and Brown NGC.
    Design.
    The dies are the regular-issue 1885 Morgan dollar dies, but there is experimental edge lettering as follows: * * * * * * E * / PLURIBUS * / UNUM * * * * *. Struck in copper.

    Commentary.
David Bowers, relating a similar piece in the New Netherlands' 61st sale (6/1970), described the edge lettering thusly:

"The edge letters appear smaller, thinner, and cruder on the sectional dollar used for the striking of this copper piece, in comparison with that used to strike the silver Judd-1747. The stars are also smaller and some are likewise poorly formed. Of the smaller letters on this lot, the B is completely without serifs, while others have shorter or blunted serifs. The edge on the last is wide and broad, while that on this copper impression is partially beveled upon both obverse and reverse. The sectional dividing line (one of three) before the P is seemingly lacking on this piece."

The rest of the quotation is mostly specific to the particular coin, but Bowers comes to the conclusion that that piece was struck at a different time, and from a different tripartite collar, from the silver Judd-1747 dollars. Both of the present lots, in silver and copper, would bear fruit for the numismatic researcher. The present copper specimen is housed in an NGC tabbed holder that allows easy viewing of the experimental edge lettering.

    Physical Description.
Spectacular appeal is the hallmark of this pristine coin, with generous patina in shades of sunset-orange and gold deepening on the high points to lilac and purple. Sharply struck and splendid. NGC Census: In PR68 Red and Brown this piece is, incredibly, tied for finest certified with another NGC example in the same grade. PCGS Population: The finest certified piece is a single PR67 Red and Brown example (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's (12/1977), lot 840.
