Description

Interesting Near-Gem 1896 Pattern One Cent

1896 P1C One Cent, Judd-1768, Pollock-1983, R.6, MS 64 Red and Brown NGC. One of just a handful of designs from the later part of the 19th century that advanced to pattern status. The obverse features a shield with thirteen stripes and a scroll inscribed LIBERTY that passes in front. Behind are two crossed poles, one bearing an eagle, the other a liberty cap. E PLURIBUS UNUM is above, 1896 is below. The reverse displays ONE CENT within a curved olive sprig with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. The border is beaded on both sides. Struck in bronze (several alloys) with a plain edge. The PCGS Population Report lists only proof specimens under this Judd number and we are inclined to believe that only proofs were struck. This coin's mottled glossy-brown and tan surfaces do, however, look deceptively like those of a business strike, but we leave it to the buyer to debate this coin's finish. Overall, this is an attractive specimen that is a few inconspicuous carbon spots away from a full Gem grade. (NGC ID# 2AM8, PCGS# 72222)
