    1896 Five Cent Nickel, Judd-1771, PR65

    1896 5C Five Cents, Judd-1771, Pollock-1986, Low R.6, PR65 NGC.
    Design.
The Charles Barber design. Shield at center obverse with LIBERTY incused. Crossed poles behind support a Liberty cap and an eagle. E PLURIBUS UNUM is at the top rim, with stars seven left, six right. On the reverse a large 5 occupies the center, with CENTS below, an olive spring surrounding and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the rim. Struck in pure nickel with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
According to an official report of the era, 15 different metallic compositions were used to strike the one and five cent patterns of 1896, with 10 pieces produced from each of the alloys. The five cent pieces were struck in standard 75%/25% nickel/copper alloy, as well as in various combinations of German silver alloy (copper, zinc, and nickel).

    Physical Description.
The silver-gray surfaces are largely pristine and attractive, despite a few tiny contact marks that account for the Gem grade. A beautiful example of this design, generally considered to be one of Barber more pedestrian and less attractive efforts. NGC Census: This piece is one of three certified PR65 at NGC, with a single PR66 finer. PCGS Population: 7 in PR65, 1 finer (12/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
    (NGC ID# 2AMC, PCGS# 62225)
