1896 Pattern Nickel, Judd-1770

1896 Five-Cents, Judd-1770, Pollock-1987, R.6, PR 63 PCGS. A shield with 13 stripes is depicted on the obverse. E PLURIBUS UNUM is above and the date below. Behind the shield are two crossed poles bearing a liberty cap and eagle. A scroll passing in front of the shield is inscribed LIBERTY. There are 13 stars at the border arranged 7 left and 6 right. The border is beaded on both sides. The denomination 5 CENTS is centered within a curved olive sprig on the reverse. Struck in copper-nickel alloy (75 percent copper, 25 percent nickel), with a plain edge. A bright, lightly toned example of this very rarely seen pattern. Sharply defined throughout.
