Very Rare 1916 Mercury Dime Pattern, Judd-1981

1916 10C Mercury Ten Cents, Judd-1981, formerly Judd-1794, Pollock-2038, R.8 PR62 NGC. This particular pattern is distinguished by the long, tapering neck of Liberty and the distance of the T in LIBERTY from Liberty's cap. Also, while this variety is noted as having no dots between the words in the motto, we see the remnants of a dot between IN and GOD, faint but definitely observable with magnification. The letters on each side are also noticeably thinner than on regular strikings, perhaps due, in part, to the polishing done to the die prior to striking this coin. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
As anyone vaguely familiar with pattern coinage is aware, pattern Mercury dimes are very rare and only infrequently offered in the marketplace. Most examples are obviously held in strong hands and reside in major pattern collections. Unfortunately, we have been unable to trace the pedigree of this particular piece. The surfaces are bright from die polishing, as mentioned, with a hazy overlay of gray-golden patina on each side. Numerous hairline-thin marks are seen on both obverse and reverse with three small planchet flaws in the left reverse field. A very rare opportunity for the pattern collector or the advanced Mercury dime collector to add this important and seldom offered pattern to his or her collection.(#62279)
