1916 Pattern Dime, PR25
Judd-1982 (formerly Judd-1794)
Only Two Pieces Known
1916 P10C Mercury Dime, Judd-1982 (formerly Judd-1794),
Pollock-2040, R.8, PR25 PCGS. CAC. Pattern for the Mercury
dime. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. The always-helpful
USPatterns.com states that there are four varieties known for the
1916 dime (not six as originally claimed by Dr. Judd). The
differences are small between each of them. This variant differs by
having,"The head slightly larger on this one with the wing feather on the cap going past the "R" in "Liberty.". Less of the "E" in "Liberty" is visible and the 6 in the date is more pointed on this as well. The reverse appears to be the same as that used on J1983/P2042."
Only two examples are known of this pattern, both of which show substantial circulation. We recently (last August) sold a Judd-1794. That description goes into some depth explaining why many of the 1916 pattern dimes show heavy circulation:
"The story that explains why these patterns were found in circulation is related in depth in Pollock's reference. An abbreviated version is that Mint Director Robert Woolley had these patterns and other coins in his home. In the 1920s his home was robbed and the thieves took anything of value, including his coin collection. Several Mercury dime patterns were included, but apparently the thieves were not able to discern their value as they looked to them like any other 1916 Mercury dime. Thus, they found their way into circulation as common dates and collectors had to discover them and reintroduce them to numismatists."
This is a silver-gray example with deeper accents around the devices. The only mark that can be used as a pedigree identifier is a horizontal nick across the front of the neck of Liberty.
