Description

1942 Experimental Cent, MS63
Judd-2054, Zinc-Coated Steel, CAC

1942 1C Cent, Judd-2054, Pollock-2074, RB 42-23, High R.7, MS63 NGC. CAC. Ex: Donald G. Partrick Collection. Burdette's third reverse. The 1942 LIBERTY JUSTICE pattern cents were struck to test various alloys to substitute for copper, which was needed for munitions during World War II. The alloy experiments culminated in the zinc-plated steel 1943 cent, thus the present alloy was the "winner" among many candidates, including plastic and fiber. This silver-gray specimen is evenly struck and exhibits unmarked, smooth surfaces. A few pinpoint, deep-gray flecks visit the obverse margins. About a dozen pieces are known, some described as proofs an others as Mint State coins. This lot comes with an unstruck (1943) Zinc Coated Steel planchet weighing 2.84 grams. Both coins were previously held in The Donald G. Partrick Collection.
