    Description

    Zinc-Coated Steel 1942 Pattern Cent, Judd-2054

1942 1C One Cent, Zinc-Coated Steel, Judd-2054, High R.7, MS62 NGC. The obverse features the female head from the Colombian two centavos, with LIBERTY left, JUSTICE right, date 1942 at bottom. The reverse shows UNITED STATES MINT in center, with a wreath surrounding, struck in medal turn on zinc-coated steel (same apparent composition as the 1943 Lincoln cents). Struck in zinc-coated steel with a plain edge. One of the wartime cent experiments in off-metal (and no-metal) composition, struck as an alternative to the copper needed for the war effort. Many similar pieces, all R.7 to R.8, were produced in various compositions, including plastic, glass, Bakelite, rubber, and manganese. The surfaces are dark charcoal-gray on this interesting and rare pattern.
