Controversial 1944 Cent--Pattern or Foreign Planchet?

1944 Cent, Unlisted in Judd, Pollock-2078, R-7 (?), MS 64 Red NGC. Regular issue Lincoln cent, but struck on a thicker planchet with a plain edge. This issue is one that is full of controversy. Judd listed these pieces in Appendix B under Mint Errors, "struck on aluminum-bronze foreign planchet." However, Pollock listed them in his chapter on 1918-1979 patterns. But he also pointed out, "that no reasonable scenario has come to our attention to explain what practical advantage could be gained by the Mint as consequence of the experimental production of such coins." We leave the buyer to conclude what was the reason for minting this interesting wartime cent. The surfaces are bright and unmellowed with a few tiny flecks of carbon that are really not noticeable without magnification. (NGC ID# 2APG, PCGS# 62400)
