1942 Uniface Cent, Struck in Phenolic Heavy Paper
    Judd-2060 (2066), RB 42-57, SP64
    Made by Durez Plastics

1942 P1C Cent, Judd-2060 (2066), Pollock-4035, Low R.7, SP64 PCGS. RB 42-57. Listed on the insert as Brown Plastic, this is instead a uniface piece that was compression molded from phenolic impregnated heavy paper. This piece was part of a group tested by the National Bureau of Standards in December 1942. The manufacturer and item number are identified by the letter/number combination that was scratched into the left and right obverse fields. The right fields has E indicating Durez Plastics, and the left has 12, showing this was test sample 12. Close examination with a loupe reveals tiny paper fibers that jut out at odd angles from the E 12 designation. The surfaces are deep reddish-brown. A series of parallel scratches are seen on the upper part of the portrait of Liberty, but we are not certain if these are actual scratches made post-production or some sort of pre-production damage to the die or planchet. The reason for uncertainty lies in the lack of fibrous remnants in this area. The reverse on this and two other patterns were subjected to an abrasion test and had their devices eliminated, " ... the discs were initially abraded with emery paper until the embossed lettering on the reverse side had been worn away ... ." Produced by the Durez Plastics and Chemical, Inc.

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
