    Description

    1964 General Motors Experimental Cent Pattern, Pollock-4060

    1964 General Motors Cent, Unlisted in Judd, Pollock-4060, R.5 (?), MS 64 Red and Brown. Female head facing left with random letters around. The reverse features a laurel wreath with random letters contained within. In the left and right obverse fields are inscribed 8 L--the control code designation which corresponds to the position of that die in the roller press apparatus. Struck in copper with a plain edge.
    Undoubtedly one of the most fascinating of modern patterns, these pieces were struck by General Motors on an experimental roller press which could produce as many as 10,000 cents per minute. The experiment was ultimately a failure as the coins did not strike up well and there was excessive breakage of the dies. The surfaces retain fair portions of mint red still but there is a significant overlay of iridescent blue and golden-brown as well.
