1866 Shield Nickel Pattern With 'Dutch' 5

1866 5C Shield Nickel, Judd-489, Pollock-577, Low R.6, PR64 NGC. The obverse has a shield design similar to that adopted for the regular issue Shield nickel, except that the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is expressed in smaller letters and the date is divided by a ball at the base of the shield. On the reverse, a "Dutch" numeral 5 is surrounded by a laurel wreath, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the rim. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. The fields are deeply mirrored and each side displays light cyan toning with a sprinkling of carbon.

The Virginia Cabinet was an old-time collection formed in the early 20th century by the great uncle of our consignor. The collector was a client of Lyman Haines Low, B. Max Mehl, Thomas L. Elder, and several other well-known auction firms.
