Double Eagle "Die Trial." Struck in white metal. 10.03 grams or 154.76 grains. A positive impression of a double eagle pattern reverse with a heraldic eagle with drooping wings, a small shield, and holding a scroll in its beak. Formerly a part of Abe Kosoff's Collection, Bowers and Merena (11/85), lot 1155, where it was stated that the piece was probably a cast impression of a die trial, and not a struck piece itself. While it is stated that this is the actual piece used for the plate in Judd at the bottom of page 233, we believe it to be a different specimen. It is stated that five of these pieces are known, all of which were "Made for Dr. J. T. Barclay by A. C. Paquet, July 6, 1857." The surfaces are pebbly and the white metal has taken on a dirty gray-golden patina in the more exposed areas of the design, otherwise brilliant.
