Description

Experimental One-Cent Planchets Struck in Billon

Pair of Experimental Billon Planchets, Appendix A in Judd, Pollock-3092 and 3095, Unique (?), MS 60. Struck in January 1849 on orders from Mint Director Patterson and forwarded to the House Ways and Means Committee to illustrate the dimensions and metallic characteristics of proposed one and three-cent pieces to be struck in billon. These two pieces are planchets for the proposed one-cent piece. The Pollock-3092 is a blank planchet with an upset rim and plain edge. It is mostly brilliant with slight traces of patina on each side, but mostly presenting as an untoned piece. The Pollock-3095 has a Roman numeral I stamped off-center with a raised impression from the stamp on the reverse. It also has an upset rim and a plain edge. Heavily toned.
While these experimental pieces look unassuming, they are certainly rich in numismatic and historical significance. It may be a commonplace among numismatic writers to imagine who might have handled a coin in the past, but the list of important persons that we know of who have handled these two pieces is long and distinguished, from the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Samuel Vinton, to Robert Patterson, to the numismatic luminaries listed in following pedigrees.
Pollock-3092 is ex: Chase Manhattan Bank Money Museum.
