Description

Unique Set of Four 1908 No Motto Twenty Dollar Die Trials

1908 No Motto Double Eagle Brass Die Trials, Similar to Pollock-2009 and 2010, MS 63. The modified Saint-Gaudens design for the twenty-dollar. Struck in brass with a lettered edge. These four die trials were defaced after striking by being passed through rollers, which flattened each into an oval shape. This process obliterated much of the design, but certain elements can be seen on each piece with the date apparent on three of the four. We are not certain why each of these were struck, but one is a die trial for a smaller size edge lettering. (This piece is also the one that shows no remnant of the date.) The four pieces are housed in a plush purple box that was custom made for this unique set.
