Unique Copper Hub Trial of the 1838 Gobrecht Dollar

Reverse Hub Trial of the 1838 Gobrecht Dollar. Listed on page 229 of Judd, Pollock-3061, unlisted in Taxay. A variant of Judd-84, this uniface, plain edge, copper hub trial is of Christian Gobrecht's 1838 silver dollar without stars in the field. The hub was the coin-relief, actual-size master of Gobrecht's work used to transfer the design into steel to make the actual dies for coining operations. Here it was struck into a large (52.22 mm.) and thick (4.78 mm.) copper planchet of a somewhat rough surface, creating an incuse and reversed design like the die. This is the Judd plate piece, ex: Lenox Lohr Collection, (page 229 of the seventh edition of Judd, attributed to the Robert Batchelder Collection). Believed to be unique in copper. This is a true trial piece, struck to check on the completeness of the hub design. For sheer impressiveness, few patterns can compete with this massive, heavy hub trial. Deep toned copper and darker in the recesses of the lettering and devices.
