Extremely Rare and Important Gobrecht "Splasher"--One of Only Two Known

Undated (1836) Uniface Obverse "Splasher" for Gobrecht's Dollar. Page 228 in Judd, Pollock-3025, EP-77. Struck in a soft, fusible alloy on an extremely thin planchet. This "splasher" was created by impressing Christian Gobrecht's unfinished die into molten metal that had been poured onto heavy paper of a 19th century book. Traces of the text from the original book may be seen on the reverse of this remarkable rarity. The design differs in several aspects from the design finally adopted. The neck of Liberty is short and thick, there is little detail on the rock to the left of Liberty, and there is no date or designer's name.
While the Pollock reference leaves open the question about whether there are one or more pieces, this is a second piece that appears to have been forgotten as it dropped out of sight for so many decades. It seems that the first time this piece was offered for public sale was in 1958 as a part of the collection of radio pioneer Major Lenox Lohr. The piece was purchased by the present consignor and has remained off the market ever since. It has the grayish-white appearance of most "splashers" with some light toning. A pronounced rim to rim die crack is noted on the lower left from 7 to 9 o'clock. Due to the extremely fragile nature of the piece, during lot viewing it must be left in the hard plastic holder that was custom made for it. Of the greatest rarity and historical importance.
