Description

Copper Plated Electrotrial for the Jefferson Nickel
by Anthony de Francisci, J-C1938-1, MS62
Most Likely Unique

Undated (1938) Five Cent Reverse Electrotrial by Anthony De Francisci, J-C1938-1, MS62 PCGS. Uniface reverse impression for the Jefferson nickel in 1938. Monticello is on the lower half with FIVE CENTS below, a glory of rays above, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / E PLURIBUS UNUM on the upper margin. Reported by USPatterns.com to be a copper electrotype shell over a silvery base metal. No rarity is stated in either the Judd reference or on-line, but it appears to be unique. Numerous small marks are scattered about the glossy brown surfaces, but the one flaw that identifies this as the same coin in the photo on-line is a dark spot on the right side.
This was de Francisci's submission for the Jefferson nickel design contest of 1938. The obverse and reverse plaster models were donated by Teresa de Francisci to the Smithsonian. This is a wonderful piece that would be fit for inclusion in an advanced collection of patterns or as a related piece for a Jefferson nickel collector.
Ex: Norweb Collection (Stack's, 11/2006), lot 1058, but not part of the Norweb's personal holdings.
