Description

    1923-D Dollar, MS66+
    Only One Numerically Finer

1923-D $1 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. The majority of this issue's 6.8 million-coin mintage was unneeded in circulated at the time of issue, and was thus retained in storage until the late 1930s and early 1940s, when quantities were finally released from the Treasury. Burdette, however, writing in A Guide Book of Peace Dollars, adds that "Even though there was a large quantity minted, a proportionately small percentage of coins survived in Gem condition because of excessive bagmarks. Even those that have received an MS65 or better grade will likely have some marks that are noticeable, and at times even distracting."

This is a well-struck, heavily frosted example, displaying a faint champagne tint overall, with rich orange-gold and russet accents seen periodically around the borders. Surface contact is virtually non-existent, and the eye appeal is exceptional. Population: 87 in 66 (2 in 66+), 1 finer (5/14).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 257G, PCGS# 7361)

    Weight: 26.73 grams
