Description

    Mattelike MS66 1923-S Peace Dollar

1923-S $1 MS66 PCGS. The 1922-S and 1923-S Peace dollar mintages are far and away the series' largest for San Francisco, totaling 17.5 million and 19 million pieces, respectively. Incredibly, however, both are extreme rarities at the Premium Gem level, where PCGS has seen six submissions of the 1922-S. For the 1923-S there are only two submissions certified in MS66, with a single MS67 finer (3/11). Clearly, the San Francisco Mint's focus during that time was on quantity, not quality. The typically encountered example either has circulation wear, bagmarks, or poor strikes. The present coin is rather well-struck for the issue, with lustrous silver-gray surfaces that have a mattelike texture. There are no mentionable contact marks, although some interesting obverse die cracks and minor surface "pebbling" near the rim are the products of extended die use and apparent die rust, respectively. Certified in a green-label holder. Population: 2 in 66, 1 finer (3/11).
