1927 Peace Dollar, Rare MS66
Tied for Finest Known

1927 $1 MS66 PCGS. A complete date and mintmark collection of Peace dollars in MS66 is theoretically an obtainable goal, although there are several issues that are rare or even prohibitively rare this fine, the 1925-S being an example of the latter with only a single Premium Gem reported. The 1927 is a rare date in this grade and unknown finer. PCGS reports 16 pieces and NGC two, with some duplication possible due to crossovers and regrades (2/18). The issue is famous for its low 848,000-coin mintage, which is the second lowest in the series, after the 1928. In A Guide Book of Peace Dollars (2008), Roger Burdette wrote: "The 1927 issue is the rarest Philadelphia-minted coin in Uncirculated condition, although the 1928 is often given this honor because of its very low total mintage. Coins in MS-63 are fairly common, but in MS-64 and higher, this coin is one of the rarer issues in the series."

This top-grade example is sharp and lustrous, showing a good cartwheel effect and softly frosted luster. Russet and amber toning appears near the borders, leaving the majority of each side with a hint of champagne warmth. No distracting abrasions are seen.
