1927-D Peace Dollar, MS66+
An Essential Registry Set Coin
Tied for Finest Known

1927-D $1 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. The greatest Peace dollar collections of modern times have been defined by the quality of the individual coins therein, and those coins' conditional rarity in the context of there individual issues. For common dates like the 1922 through 1925 Philadelphia issues, that upper tier of quality begins in MS67, and the goal of ambitious specialists is to acquire an MS67+. For condition keys, like the 1925-S and 1928-S, an MS65 coin represents a monumental achievement. For the 1927-D, the grade where examples become prized rarities is MS66, with the most advanced collectors patiently seeking out a handful of MS66+ coins. No examples of the 1927-D are finer than MS66+ (6/23).

This remarkable specimen is not only one of the few finest examples of the date certified, it also carries CAC endorsement, further distinguishing it from its peers. Frosty cartwheel luster rolls unabraded across each side, yielding hints of olive and russet toning near the borders with ivory-white color elsewhere. The strike is sharp, and overall eye appeal is simply remarkable.

Premium Gem 1927-D Peace dollars appear at auction even less frequently than the small certified population would suggest. We have seen such a coin on only 13 prior occasions, including a previous appearance of the current coin more than a decade ago. Recognition of this issue's rarity in high grade has grown since then, and a recent offering of a PCGS MS66+ CAC example in our 2021 ANA Signature -- Ex: JDC Collection -- realized $90,000. The current coin is at least that example's technical and visual equal. Population: 24 in 66 (6 in 66+), 0 finer. CAC: 8 in 66, 0 finer (6/23).
