    Premium Gem 1927-D Peace Dollar
    A Registry Collector Essential

1927-D $1 MS66 PCGS. CAC. Robert Moreno, Joseph C. Thomas, Dr. Barry Southerland, Paul Taylor: four great Heritage Featured Collections with Peace dollar holdings defined in large part by the ownership of a 1927-D in MS66. Until the day an MS67 example of the issue is certified, the handful of Premium Gems will rule the day, and given how challenging the issue is in lesser Mint State grades such as MS63, it is only to be expected that demand for the top examples will be fierce and many critical eyes will look at the best coins. (Among the previous owners of a 1927-D Peace dollar in MS66: Jack Lee of Morgan dollar fame.)
For an added layer of challenge -- and reassurance -- the potential Registry Set collector will want to examine the pool of CAC-stickered coins. Between the three NGC MS66 examples and the 10 certified by PCGS (11/11), only four of those coins have received a CAC sticker; while CAC does not distinguish between NGC and PCGS, Heritage's Auction Archives show that at least two coins are PCGS-graded: the present example and the Jack Lee-Paul Taylor specimen.
Light to medium silver-gray patina covers most of the interiors, with the reverse adding a blush of rose over the eagle. Peripheral toning is more colorful, gold-orange to the left and right on the obverse with faint, dappled echoes along the reverse. A well-made coin, as 1927-D Peace dollars usually are, this Premium Gem has a decent strike and strong, swirling luster that flashes at the appropriate angles. Marks are few, though a shallow midlength mark just above the eagle's tailfeathers precludes an even finer designation. A beautiful coin for display.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 257T, PCGS# 7371)
