Description

Sharply Struck 1928-S Gem Peace Dollar
With Satiny Surfaces and Iridescent Rim Patina

1928-S $1 MS65 PCGS. The mintage of 1928-S Peace dollars exceeded 1.6 million pieces, but most of them suffer from abrasions or strike deficiencies that keep them from the Gem level. The present example is a wonderful exception to the rule, with center details that are close to a full strike, and a relative lack of contact that puts this piece well within the confines of the Gem grade. The satiny surfaces show soft silver-gray patina that deepens near the rims into wonderful iridescent colors. In this grade, the 1928-S is actually far more elusive than the better-known 1928 Peace dollar. This Gem 1928-S is one of only 46 so graded at PCGS (compared to more than 200 of the 1928), with a single MS66 finer (8/10).
