Description

1934-S Dollar, A Pleasing MS65
The Key to the Series

1934-S $1 MS65 PCGS. The 1934-S is the key to the Peace dollars series. In addition to having one of the smaller mintages (1.011 million pieces), many were released into circulation, making Uncirculated pieces relatively rare. Indeed, population reports from the major grading services show that the 1934-S has the smallest number of coins in MS60 and higher. Contributing to the issue's rarity is the fact that it was thought by collectors in the 1930s and 1940s to be very common because several other issues were produced in smaller numbers. Consequently, no significant hoards of 1934-S dollars were established.

Our Gem offering displays occasional whispers of light gold color on its lustrous surfaces. The design elements are much better-struck than most coins from the San Francisco Mint. The above-average detail in the hair over Liberty's ear and the eagle's wing feathers is especially significant in this regard as these areas are often flat. Additionally, the right (facing) leg exhibits a modicum of feather detail and is sharply separated from the wing. Another plus is that the few marks and scuffs are not severe or detracting. In summary, this is a rather pleasing representative of this key-date issue.(Registry values: N2998)
