South Peru. Republic gold 8 Escudos 1838 CUZCO-MS MS65 NGC, Cuzco mint, KM171, Fr-92. An exemplary representative of this two-year type, the largest gold denomination issued by this short-lived Peru-Bolivia Confederation between 1836 to 1839. Luxurious Gem quality anoints the surfaces in hand, the devices (even the sunface) especially crisp and the bloom particularly fervent. Matching the quality of the Eliasberg/Clapp specimen, with just one example ranking higher on the NGC census, the opportunity to acquire this fleeting historical type so fine will likely not present itself soon.
