Description
1918-S Philippines Five Centavos, MS64
Muled with 20 Centavos Reverse
1918-S 5C Philippines 5 Centavos, Mule, Allen-4.08b, MS64
PCGS. The large eagle, small date, and wide reverse rim confirm
the rare mule variety. The usual 1918-S five centavos has a 20.5 mm
diameter, close to the 1918-S 20 mm diameter for the 20 centavos.
Given that the denomination is on the obverse, it was an
understandable mint worker error to pair a five centavos obverse
die with a 20 centavos reverse die. PCGS has certified 45 pieces in
all grades, predominately in circulated condition. The present
near-Gem ranks among the finest extant. It is pedigreed to the
celebrated collection of Dr. McFadden, and in its prior Heritage
auction appearance realized $41,125. The smooth, coruscating
surfaces display medium rose-red, ice-blue, and lilac toning. A
crisp strike further ensures the eye appeal. Population: 2 in 64, 1
finer (11/21).Ex: Dr. Roger R. McFadden / 2014 Chicago World Coins Signature (Heritage, 4/2014), lot 25633.
